25-10-2008 New York, United Nations, manholes and Miffy

We visited the UN. Lots of tourists - I think they were from China- visited the United Nations building, today. Inside wasn't as promising as the security check made us believe. The coffee shop was closed and the tourists shops weren't inspiring. But we had some fun. Just like the kids who visited the place also, although...

Everywhere on Manhattan you see steam coming out of manholes. This only happens when an underground pipe cracks. New York has his own central heating system. Since the 19th century steam is blown into pipes to warm up streets, schools and other public areas. Read more about this here.
